WRITING
I have been a freelance writer for ten years; the last five years full-time, and my specialty is travel writing (although I also write in other genres). I have had over 500 articles published worldwide. I am the author of The Rough Guide to Malta & Gozo, mini-guidebooks on Hamburg and Malta, and a book of travel essays on Malta. I have also had various columns: a weekly column for Malta Today (a Maltese national newspaper), a column on nightlife in London for Nitevibe (US magazine), and a travel column published by the Rough Guides. Other areas that interest me, and I have written about, include cooking and the craft of writing. I also occassionally write in other genres such as essays and features or articles.
Before I started writing I studied veterinary science and agriculture at university level, and I ran a wild bird hospital in Malta. For several years I was heavily involved in the environment movement, and my knowledge of environmental issues and earth sciences has led me to write extensively about these subjects.

PHOTOGRAPHY
I do all kinds of photojournalism, yet my specialty is travel photography in its widest sense. I take pictures regularly on my own steam (to continue building a personal photo library), and I also take photos on commission for specific projects.
The largest photo assignment I have done is to shoot over 200 subjects for for a glossy pictorial London guide (London Directions). My photographs have also been published widely: either as stand-alones, or as illustrations for my stories. I have also had pictures published in illustrated books, guidebooks, promotional campaigns, and photo essays. Notable successes include a picture of fireworks that was used in a promotional campaign by Canon Ltd (as an example of what can be achieved by Canon cameras) and a picture of a bloodied heron used in a poster campaign in Malta.
I have outstanding, extensive pictures of the following places: London, Malta, India, Thailand, Laos, and Australia.

The majority of pieces reproduced in this website have been published, yet some - and some of the best pieces - are yet unpublished (either because the particular publication I wrote it for went bust, or because I would have written the story on a whim and it failed to find a buyer). Any of the pieces on this website are, of course, also on offer as reprints - or even as original pieces (First Serial Rights) in the countries that they have not been published. If interested, contact me.
There are also some subjects or countries that I know very well. The most obvious of these places is Malta: I am the Malta expert. I also know London well. Other countries I have researched and written about are India, Turkey, Britain (and other European countries), Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Australia. Other subjects I know and write about are writing, cooking, restaurants (and nightlife), politics, and the culture of travel.
