Writing
Most of my writing is travel-writing in its widest sense and its many forms. A major part of my travel writing consists of long newsy stories spun on some new developments - anything that gives the story a topical relevancy and new information (you can read these articles under the Travel Features section).
I also do other forms of writing. In other travel-related writings, I have done essays and adventure narratives for magazines or book anthologies, as well as first-person travel stories. Passion for food also results in regular stories about food and travel. Occasionally I do article features - these can be related or unrelated to travel, or about other subjects such as lifestyle, science, archeology or society.
In travel writing, I work differently from most other travel writers. I research destinations extensively and spend as much time needed doing the research as necessary; my research is often journalistic in its breath and scope, although focused on travel destinations. This means I only visit a handful of places every year. This way of working adds depth to all the writings about a particular destination. This also means that I work by association - instead of trying to cover disparate and varied subjects or destinations, I have build up extensive research about certain regions. I’m now strongest in east and south Asia - the region where I have lived for much of the past 8 years - and the Mediterranean, the region where I grew up and first started exploring, and now return to regularly.
Like most other freelancers, I generate most of my ideas for stories. This allows me to work on things I feel most passionate about, and things or places I know best, gradually building up an expertise for certain regions or countries, and for certain subjects. However, I am always ready to consider assignments suggested by editors themselves, as well as other sorts of writing or photography projects.
Photography
My photography is in the most part closely linked to the need to illustrate my articles. I shoot widely when travelling on research, and that way I would have enough pictures to illustrate my articles (for the publications that work in this manner, accepting words-pics packages) and then also sell the pictures independently.
I have also done a handful of photography assignments unrelated to my writings. The two largest photography assignments I undertook involved shooting hundreds of subjects to illustrate two entire picture-led guidebooks by Rough Guides.
I shoot a combination of slides and digital. This is determined by the client - whether the client prefers slides, and pays enough to justify the extra cost - as well as by the subject (I use slides for subjects that have the potential to be reproduced large in magazines, such as page spreads, and shoot digital for more mundane subjects).
The small selections of pictures in this website aim to introduce my photography; the pictures present in that section are just a fraction of my entire collection. I’m open to offers for commissions.
Track Record
In some 19 years of writing I have written more than two million words. I have had more than a thousand articles published in more than 100 publications around the world. I have also written a few guidebooks, and contributed to a few others; I also had essays and travel stories published in a few book anthologies. My articles have been published in publications large and small - in many national newspapers and magazines in many countries, and in some of the world’s most eminent travel publications.
Contact
Aside from spending a chunk of the year on travels, I also use three different bases. Best way to contact me is via email - mail@victorborg.com or victor@borg.tf or victor_borg@yahoo.com.
